Sydney McLaughlin Will Bypass World Juniors, Focus On Rio Olympic Games

Sydney McLaughlin produced a world-leading time to win the women’s 400m hurdles at Sunday’s (6 June) Music City Track Carnival in Nashville, Tennessee.

McLaughlin, the overwhelming favourites for this summer’s Tokyo Olympic Games, ran a blistering 52.83 seconds.

The 21-year-old time puts her alongside Lashinda Demus as the most prolific sub-53 performer in history. The mark is also the 13th best performance in the USA’s history.

She was running her first 400 hurdles race since the Doha 2019 World Championship final. She was second to fellow American Dalilah Muhammad, who clocked a world record 52.16 in the Doha 2019 final.

McLaughlin, who shows no sign of rust, is the first woman under 53 seconds this year, winning comfortably.

“Good to get the rust off,” she told ESPN after the race. “Definitely, some things to work on, but I am glad I am back.”

Jamaican Leah Nugent ran a season-best 55.34 for second, and Sage Watson of Canada, 56.04, finished in third place.

Americans Trevor Bassitt, 48.80, Kenny Salmon, 48.96 and CJ Allen, 48.97, were the top men from the 400m hurdles.
