Abigail Schaffe

Former St. Mary High standout Abigail Schaffe was a winner at last weekend’s (27 Feb) Big 10 Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio State.

Schaffe, who is in her freshman year at the University of Minnesota, won the women’s 600m final in 1:27.96. She beat her senior teammate Val Larson, 1:28.67 for the title.

Clare Pitcher of Iowa finished third in 1:29.96.

Earlier in the heats, Schaffe qualified with the second-fastest time of 1:30.05. She won her heat, but Larson, the winner of heat 2, recorded the fastest preliminary round time of 1:29.66.

Schaffe and fellow Jamaican Janielle Josephs helped Minnesota to victory in the women’s 4x400m relay. They teamed up with Jayla Campbell and Larson to run 3:35.51 for the win.

British Virgin Islands’ Rikkoi Brathwaite won the men’s 60m final for Indiana in 6.68s. He beat Jamaican Waseem Williams, representing Purdue, 6.71.

Jamaican Wayne Lawrence Jr picked up two silver medals. He ran 20.89 in the 200m and 45.40 in the 400m.
He was beaten by Ohio State’s Tyler Johnson, 20.86 and 45.07, a new championship record in both races.

Josephs, formerly of St. Andrews High, was third in the women’s 400m with 53.96. Ziyah Holman of Michigan won the event in 52.76.

Yanique Dayle, formerly of Hydel, finished fifth in the women’s 60m dash. She ran 7.50 collected four points for Ohio State.

Amira Young of Minnesota won the sprint double – 60m in 7.31 and 200min 23.24.

The Minnesota Gophers registered 138 points during the three-day meet to clinch their fifth Big Ten indoor title in program history and the first since 2018.
