Some of the biggest track and field nations will stage their 2021 Indoor Championships on the same weekend.

USA, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain agreed to stage national championships on February 20 and 21.

It is expected that other countries will follow this window. Such a move means the protection of the championships as no international meetings will be staged during that weekend.

“World Athletics strongly encourages Member Federations, where possible and as applicable, to stage their 2021 National Indoor Championships on this weekend as no World Indoor Tour or Area Permitted events will take place, helping to ensure the availability of all the top athletes for the Championships,” wrote World Athletics CEO John Ridgeon in a letter to member federations.

Pierce O’Callaghan, who is the project leader of the WA Global Calendar Unit, pointed out that for all athletes this weekend is favourable because in March the European Indoor Championships in Torun (qualification deadline February 24) and World Indoor Championships in Nanjing are planned.
