Jamaica’s four-time world 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce missed on being crowned Female Athlete of the Year (AOY) at Saturday’s World Athletics Gala in Monaco.
Fraser-Pryce, who won the Doha 2019 world 100m title, was shortlisted among five athletes for the award.
Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge and US 400m hurdles World champion Dalilah Muhammad are the Male and Female Athletes of the Year for 2019.
The 29-year-old Muhammad broke the 400m hurdles world record twice in 2019.
She ran 52.20 at the US Championships in July and then lowered that mark to 52.16 to win the Doha 2019 world title. Muhammad is the first female 400 m hurdler winning the award after Sally Gunnell in 1993.
On the male side, Kipchoge, the winner of the award last year, added to his phenomenal marathon CV in 2019, the London Marathon crown, covering the distance in 1:59:40.2 at the Ineos159 Challenge in Vienna.
