Elaine Thompson, after her first indoor meet of 2017, is the world leader for 60 metres. Thompson ran the only sub-7 seconds at Saturday’s Muller Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham, England.
The Rio Olympic 100/200m champion stopped the clock in 6.98 seconds to beat closest rivals and fellow Jamaicans Gayon Evans, 7.17 and Christania Williams, 7.18.
Thompson had earlier ran 7.22 in the heats.
In the men’s event, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Kim Collins ran 6.58secs, one hundredth of a second slower than his heat’s time of 6.57.
American Ronnie Baker topped the men’s 60m in 6.55 while Jamaicans Everton Clarke, 6.58, and Julian Forte, 6.59, were 4th and 5th respectively.
Bahamians Jamal Wilson and Donald Thomas with the same clearance of 2.20m, finished joint fourth and 6th respectively in the men’s high jump won by Erik Kynard of USA with 2.31m.
Verone Chambers, also of Jamaica, was 6th in the women’s 400m in 54.59. Chez Republic’s Zuzana Hejnova won the event in 51.77
Jamaican Megan Simmonds ran 8.07 in the heats and 8.24 for 8th in the final of the women’s 60m hurdles, won by USA’s Christina Manning, 7.83.
