Terrence Jones sets new NR to win at Corky Classic

LUBBOCK, USA – Bahamas’ 20-year-old Terrence Jones had a sensational opener with a new collegiate 60m indoor record at the Corky Classic on Saturday (15 Jan).

Jones, who turned 20 on 8 Jan, ran 6.45 to win the final. He ran 6.53 in his semi-finals.

With a 100m of personal best of 10.39, these were his first 60m races. The new national record moved him to ninth on the all-time world list.

“It was my first indoor meet ever,” Jones said. “I just wanted to get through the meet, execute, do what my coaches tell me and then just produce results,” from Texastech.com.

Second Jacoby Shelton 6.59 PB ahead of Emmanuel Matadi from Liberia 6.60. American Mike Rodgers, who turns 37 in April, ran 6.65 for fourth place.

Ruth Usoro added more than half a metre to the Nigerian triple jump record with 14.76m, also beating her outdoor record of 14.50m.

Other highlights were Jordan Geist with 20.59m in the shot, Trey Culver with 2.22m in the high jump, Matthew Moorer 20.83secs in the 200m and Barbados Shane Brathwaite 7.73secs in the short hurdles.

World U20 hurdles champion Ackera Nugent from Jamaica clocked 60m flat PB of 7.27.
