Tajay Gayle and Shanieka Ricketts, Jamaican medallists from Doha’s 2019 World Championships, were winners at Saturday’s (13 March) JAAA Qualification Trials in Kingston.
World champion Tajay Gayle leapt 7.77m to take the men’s long jump. Domon Williams of Ricketts Performance Centre was the closest to Gayle with 7.38m.
Shanieka Ricketts, second at the Doha 2019 world championships, hop-skip-jump 13.93 metres to win the triple jump. Antoine Sandisha of Ricketts Performance Centre ended second with 12.90m.
Meanwhile, Elaine Thompson-Herah opened her season with a 400m run. Thomspon-Herah cruised for the first 300m before powered home in 56.26.
Ronda Whyte of Sprintec won the event in 51.82 ahead of UWI Mona’s pair of Candice McLeod, 52.61 and Roneisha McGregor, 52.71.
Doha 2019 World 400m hurdles bronze medallist Russell Clayton of Swept ended fifth in 53.93.
Former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell also had his first official race of 2021. He ran 50.32s for 14th overall in the men’s 400m.
The top male quarter-miler was Racers Track Club’s Keeno Burrell with 46.93 to beat Troy Whyte of GC Foster College, 46.94.
Former world 100m champion Yohan Blake won heat 5 of the men’s 100m in 10.29 for third overall. Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain and Racers club member won the men’s 100m in 10.14, a world-leading time.
Hughes, who represented Anguilla at the junior level, beat his clubmate Oblique Seville, 10.19.
Shimayra Williams was the fastest women’s 100m sprinter with 11.34 against a -1.7m/s wind.
Shericka Jackson of MVP and Jamaica’s Doha 400m bronze medallist won her heat in 11.46. She limped across the line and went down in pain.
Barbadian Sada Williams, who is training with MVP, topped the women’s half-lap event in 23.08 ahead of former Hydel star Ashanti Moore, 23.24.
Shashalee Forbes of Sprintec finished third in 23.31, and Stephenie-Ann McPherson of MVP fourth in 23.41.
The men’s 200m went to former Antigua and Barbuda’s sprinter Miguel Francis, who now represents Great Britain. Francis, who trains at Racers, ran 20.51 into a -1.5m/s wind to beat Oshane Bailey of Sprintec, 20.83 and Nigel Ellis of MVP, 21.03
O’Dayne Richards of MVP won the men’s shot put with 19.00m.
Junell Bromfield, for the second time this season, was the lone 800m competitor, and she crossed the line in 2:08.01.
Kimar Farquharson won the men’s 800m in 1:48.39.
