BEIJING, China – Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce easily won her semifinals heat on Monday, to advance to the final of the women’s 100 metres at the World Championships here.
Fraser-Pryce shot from the blocks and led from start to finish as Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare closed quickly for second. Fraser-Pryce was timed in 10.82 seconds with Okagbare doing 10.89 as Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast 11.04 ending third.
Only Fraser-Pryce and Okagbare advanced to the final as Jamaica’s Sherone Simspson and Trinidad and Tobago’s Semoy Hacket finishing fifth and sixth in 11.06 and 11.13.
The second heat was much faster and Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste was second to the American Tori Bowe of the United States. Bowie finished in 10.87 seconds, Baptiste 10.90 and Jamaica’s Natasha Morrison 10.96 as all three qualified for the final.
In the third semifinals heat, Veronica Campbell Brown led for most of the race but was passed in the final five metres by Dafne Schippers of Netherlands. The latter was timed in 10.83 with Campbell-Brown doing 10.89 and Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye third in 10.97. All three made the final.
