RIO DE JANEIRO, August 22, 2016 – IOC President Thomas Bach insisted on defining the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as ‘iconic’ . But what is it that made them iconic? Or better yet, who? AIPS asked a panel of 55 journalists from 20 countries who they think is the athlete of Rio 2016 that we will remember in a few years’ time, the icon of the Games.

Our panel pronounced Usain Bolt as the indesputable winner of this specific Olympic title followed by Michael Phelps. But many other athletes made this Games what they were like Neymar, Simone Biles, Wayde van Niekerk and so many others that are mentioned below.

At the age of 30 Usain Bolt isn’t just an immense athlete for his results (Olympic Champion in 100mt, 200mt, 4x100mt) but also for his uncommon longevity: the public loves him so much that IAAF President himself confirms: ‘We have been speaking about his charismatic role and importance for the athletics movement, he will be something more than an ambassador, when it will come the time, we will see’
