Sydney McLaughlin breaks world 400H record

Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin broke her own world record to win the 400m hurdles in 51.41 at the US Championships in Eugene on Saturday (25).

The world silver medallist, competing on the track on which she set her first world record last year, had eased through the rounds with a 54.11 heat on Thursday and a 52.90 semifinal run on Friday.

Drawn in lane five for the final, she had already built up a significant lead by the time she reached the back straight. That margin continued to grow as she negotiated each barrier and she entered the home straight with a lead of about six metres.

Sydney McLaughlin maintained her composure and technique in the closing stages and charged through the finish line in 51.41, winning by a huge margin. NCAA champion Britton Wilson was second in a PB of 53.08 while Shamier Little claimed third place in a season’s best of 53.92.

World champion and former world record-holder Dalilah Muhammad will have a wildcard entry to the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 as defending champion.

The past four clashes between Sydney McLaughlin and Muhammad have resulted in world records. Muhammad clocked a world record of 52.20 to win the 2019 US title then improved to 52.16 to win the world title in Doha. Last year McLaughlin turned the tables and ran 51.90 at the US Trials before winning Olympic gold in a world record of 51.46.

The next clash between the duo will likely happen at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.
