Records Tumble as Stars Shine at 51st Carifta Games

Janae De Gannes and Dior-Rae Scott shone brightly on the final morning of the 51st CARIFTA Games at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada. The young stars produced stellar performances by shattering records in their respective events.

In the Girls Long Jump Under 20 category, Janae De Gannes from Trinidad and Tobago soared to victory with a remarkable leap of 6.50 meters (21 feet 4 inches), setting a new Carifta Games record. Yanis David of Guadeloupe held the previous record of 6.48m since 2016.

De Gannes’ consistent performance throughout the competition showcased her exceptional talent and determination. She also recorded marks of 5.89m, 6.30m, 6.13m, 5.92m, and 6.00m.

Meanwhile, Dior-Rae Scott of the Bahamas showcased her prowess in the Girls Javelin Throw Under 17 event, breaking the previous record with an impressive throw of 52.53 meters (172 feet 4 inches). Scott’s remarkable achievement erased her countrywoman Kamera Strachan’s 2023 mark of 46.07m.

Her dedication and skill also saw other marks of 44.63m, 45.64m, and 42.57m.

Other notable performances included Rasheda Samuels and Dejanae Bruce from Jamaica, dominating the Girls High Jump Under 20 category. Samuels cleared a height of 1.78 meters (5 feet 10 inches) to secure the gold medal, while Bruce clinched silver with a jump of 1.76 meters (5 feet 9.25 inches).

Grenada leads the qualifiers in the U20 boys 4x400m with a time of 3:12.09, ahead of Jamaica, the winner of semi-final 2 in 3:13.52. There were also qualifying rounds in the U17 sprint hurdles, while both U20 sprint hurdle races will be straight finals.
