Texas A&M Set to Host Final Tune-Up

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –A week after travelling to Clemson, S.C., the Aggies return home to host the Texas A&M Invite on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium.

“This meet serves as an opportunity for some athlete’s last chance to make the SEC Championships team,” head coach Pat Henry said. “Coaches will evaluate before we make our final decisions on the last few open spots.”

The one-day meeting will begin with field events at 4:30 p.m., followed by running events at 5:00 p.m. Live results are available for both days on Flash Results, there will not be a live stream. Tickets are available from $4-7 at the gate or call Texas A&M Athletic Ticket office at 888-9Aggie (992-4443) for more information.

The Competition

In competition with the Aggies will include local universities such as Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and others.

Last Time Out

Texas A&M travelled to Clemson, S.C., to compete in the two day Tiger Paw Invitational. Eight Aggies finished the meet setting a personal best in their respective event, including Rachel Bernardo as the only Aggie to set a personal best (mile and 3000m) on both days. Jon Bishop was the lone Aggie to win an individual event (3000m), while Jamal Walton, Bryce Deadmon, Carlton Orange and Devin Dixon combined to take gold in the men’s 4x400m.

Tyra Gittens, Ashley Driscoll, Charokee Young, Eric Casarez, Zephyr Seagraves, Bernardo and Bishop each recorded marks that placed them among the Aggie all-time top-10 performers list. Despite not winning their event, Gittens (long jump), Young (800m) and Ciynamon Stevenson each placed as the top collegiate finisher.

Final Tune-Up

With some seeing the Texas A&M Invite as the last opportunity to make the SEC Championship team, others will have the meet serve as a final tune-up in preparation for next week. Some of the top Aggies currently in the top-10 of the SEC that plan on competing include Tyra Gittens, Kriby Matocha, LaJarvia Brown and Virginia Preiss on the women’s side. On the men’s side Logan Freeman, Zach Davis, Lagarious McQuirter, Alstian Walker, CJ Stevenson and Brittan Burns will do the maroon and white.

Rojas breaks world indoor triple jump record in Madrid

With her final attempt of the evening, Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas bounded out to a world indoor triple jump record of 15.43m at the Meeting Villa de Madrid, the final World Athletics Indoor Tour meeting of the season, on Friday (21).

The two-time world champion opened with a foul but then registered a valid 14.65m in round two to immediately move into the lead. After another foul in round three, she sailed out to 15.29m in round four, breaking her own South American indoor record and moving to second on the world indoor all-time list.

She wasn’t finished, though.

Following a third foul in round five, Rojas commanded the attention of the packed-out Polideportivo Gallur for her sixth and final attempt. She nailed every stage and landed at 15.43m, adding seven centimetres to the world indoor record that had stood since 2004.

It was also two centimetres farther than her outdoor PB and is the absolute second-best triple jump performance, indoors or outdoors.

Barbados’ 11-yr-old girl clocks 23.13secs in 200m?

Jakaira Jones-Smith

Jakaira Jones-Smith’s unbelievably 200m run at Thursday’s (20 Feb) Barbados’ Primary School Athletics Championships is under scrutiny.

Full Results Race video below

The 11-year-old, according to the meet results page, stopped the clock in 23.13 seconds to win the U13 girls’ 200m final.

Jones-Smith, who ran from lane three in heat three, beat Kira Wickham of Cuthbert Moore, 28.31.

Markeisha Chandler of A.DaCosta, the heat four winner, was third overall with 28.59.

No wind reading was available for the event and based on this writer’s timing of the video, the time seems more likely to be 28secs, a second ahead of second place.

Jaria Hoyte of Bayley’s Primary ran 26.68 in 2010 for the event record.

In 2019, Jones-Smith ran 30.79 in the U11 category, which raised questions about the seven-second improvement in one year.

Jones-Smith’s Belmont Primary failed to an impact in the 4x100m final, finishing 9th in 1:02.80. All Saints Primary won the event in 58.36.

The boys’ 200m dash for U13 athletes was won by Dimani Alleyne of St. Judes Primary in 27.34 ahead of Jazzair Best of Blackman and Gollop, 27.86
Alleyne completed the double by winning the 100m in 13.38.

Ri-Anne Maloney of Blackman and Gollop took the U13 girls’ 100m gold medal in 13.99.
