XIAMENT, CHN: The 15th edition of the Wanda Diamond League launches in Xiamen, China, on Saturday, marking the earliest date for a Diamond League meet ever. Xiamen will host the first of 14 regular-season events, the most since the series began in 2010.

Athletes are expected to set world-leading marks in most disciplines. Winners at individual meets will receive $10,000, increasing to $30,000 in the finals.

Event-by-Event Short Previews:

Women:

  • 200m: Sha’Carri Richardson aims for victory, with Mujinga Kambundji competing in her first race since September 2023.
  • 400m: World champion Marileidy Paulino competes against fellow medalists Natalia Kaczmarek and Sada Williams.
  • 1500m: Ethiopian athletes Freweyni Hailu, Diribe Welteji, and Gudaf Tsegay vie for the season’s first outdoor sub-4:00.
  • 3000m Steeplechase: Veteran Beatrice Chepkoech faces young talent Faith Cherotich and Peruth Chemutai.
  • 100m Hurdles: Olympic, World, World Indoor champions, and world record holder – Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Danielle Williams, Devynne Charlton, and Tobi Amusan compete.
  • Shot Put: Chase Jackson, Sarah Mitton, and local star Gong Lijiao, all Budapest medalists, compete for the first 20m throw of the season. Yemisi Ogunleye also competes.
  • Discus: Laulauga Tausaga faces Valarie Allman again, with Yaimé Pérez after a recent 73m attempt. Top 8 from Budapest 2023 are present.
  • Javelin (non-DL): Top Chinese athletes, except Yan Ziyi, compete against world medalist Flor Ruiz.

Men:

  • 100m: Champions Fred Kerley and Christian Coleman face off, with Ackeem Blake also competing.
  • 800m: Marco Arop targets victory.
  • 5000m: Open clash with steeple world record holder Lamecha Girma competing against specialists like Muktar Edris, Nibret Melak, and Nicholas Kipkorir aiming for the first sub-13:00 of the outdoor season.
  • 110m Hurdles: Hansle Parchment competes against Daniel Roberts.
  • High Jump: Mutaz Essa Barshim faces World Indoor champion Hamish Kerr.
  • Pole Vault: Mondo Duplantis targets victory and his first outdoor 6-meter attempt of the season.
  • Triple Jump: Hugues Fabrice Zango is the favorite, with Pedro Pichardo competing in his first event since May 2023.
