Jamaican high school athletes won five individual events on Thursday’s opening day of the 123rd Penn Relays at Franklin Field Stadium.

Jonique Burgher, Gabrille McDonald and Foni Richards, all of Edwin Allen, won three of those events.

McDonald’s victory came in the high school girls’ 400m hurdles. The Champs winner covered one lap obstacle event in 58.65, the only in the field to run sub-59.

Lauren Hoffman of Battlefield was the only other hurdler to get under 1-minute with 59.69.

Burgher topped the high jump with 1.78m. She beat My’Khiyah Williams of Benjamin Banneker 1.71m.

Rushelle Jones of Excelsior and Vere’s Lamara Distin, both cleared 1.71m for 6th and 7th respectively.

Richards threw 51.66m to take victory in the girls’ discus throw over Pamela Amaechi of Abraham Lincoln 49.86m. Aiko Jones of Wolmer’s finished 9th with 42.51m.

St. Jago’s Tissanna Hickling leapt 6.28m to take the top spot in the 6.28m for the second straight year.
Edwin Allen’s Annia Ashley, 5.98m, was third behind second place finisher Breana Gambrell of Athens, 5.98m

Holmwood Tech’s Keneva Headley, in her first year at Penn Relays, hop, skip and jump 13.00m, to take victory in the girls’ triple jump.
Myesha Nott of Rusea’s with 12.66m and Daneille Spencer, 12.66m, finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
