WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FACT:

The 1999 staging in Seville, Spain saw the Bahamas female quartette of Sevatheda Fynes, Chandra Sturrup, Pauline Davis and Debbie Ferguson win gold – the first for their country in the history of the event – in the 4x100m relay.

They were clocked in 41.92, finishing ahead of  France with Christine Arron sprinting the final leg (42.06) and Jamaica, Petagaye Dowdie on anchor (42.15) The same team repeated at the Olympics in Sydney the following year and were to become known as the Golden Girls.
