Kingston, Jamaica – Windward Road and John Mills continue to share the lead in the respective male and female points table at the end of day two of the 36th INSPORTS Junior High & All-Age Athletics Championship at the National Stadium.
The two main title aspirants actually switched leads in both categories with John Mills assuming leadership in the female category and vice versa for Windward Road in the male division.
On a day where there was no record broken, John Mills lead in the overall standing with 95.5 points, with Windward Road within striking distance on 91 points. Louie Bennett Coverley are in third on 49 points, while Coburn Gardens lies fourth on 43.5 points.
The battle between these two teams is just as close in the female division with John Mills ahead on 51.5 points and Windward Road second with 42 points, while Cokburn Gardens are in third on 35.5 points. In the male section Windward Road are atop with 49 points, ahead of John Mills (44), Louise Bennett Coverley (24) and MICO Practising (10.5)
In the Class One girl’s long jump, Erolisha Warren of Louise Bennett Coverley struck gold with a mark of 4.76m, while Coburn Gardens’ Annistassia Livingston (4.69m) won silver ahead of Swallowfield’s Rasheda Beckford (4.64), who took bronze.
The Class Two boy’s high jump was high competitive, as Windward Road’s Kenakay Hanson topped the field with a best effort of 1.60m. The next four best competitors all registered 1.55m as their best mark, however, Demar Sayles of Calabar took second, while Coburn Gardens’ Oshae Codner finished third.
Ophelia Powell of Melrose threw an impressive 9.56m to claim gold in the girl’s shot put open, well ahead of John Mills’ Shenell Thompson (9.05m) and Calabar’s Jamilea Thomas, who took the bronze with a mark of 8.96m.
Windward Road and John Mills shared the top-four spots in the Class Three boy’s high jump won by Astley Davis (1.50m) of the former while his teammate Alex Brown claim third with 1.40m. Negus Morris of the latter was second with clearance of 1.45m.
The Class One boy’s high jump proved to be very entertaining, as John Mills’ Tavar Slowley struck gold with 1.75m.Windward Road’s Kemar Gabbidon battle hard to snatch second ahead of Jevauni Davis of Louise Bennett Coverley, as both athletes, along with fourth place finisher Tyreek Haughton of Windward Road cleared the bar at 1.65m.
Constant Spring and Osborne Store struck gold in the first track events at these championships; this in the 1500m Open finals.
Sovereena Silburn of Constant Spring won the girl’s category in five minutes 40.29 seconds ahead of Janeisha Cowan of Green Park (5:47.58) and John Mills’ Kayla Briggs, who stopped the clocked at six minutes, 47.58 seconds.
In the boy’s equivalent, Calits Reid Clarendon-based Osbourne Store won comfortably in four minutes 38.10 seconds, beating Kimani Mishley (4:44.17)of Windward Road and Jamar Weise (4:44.99) of Louise Bennett Coverley.
A total of 59 finals will be contested on tomorrow’s third and final day.
