The 2015 edition of the Boys & Girls Championships will mark the end of an illustrious ‘champs’ career for Edwin Allen High School stalwart Saqukine Cameron.
The multi-talented athlete who turns 19 in August is capable of finishing on the podium in any one of the three Class 1 sprinting events namely 100m, 200m and 400m. She is the only remaining member of the all-conquering and record-breaking Edwin Allen 4x100m quartet of 2014.
This fiercely competitive athlete is not only a superb curve runner but also an excellent team player and points accumulator. It is anybody’s guess as to which events Saqukine Cameron will compete in at ‘Champs 2015’ as those decisions will depend heavily on her level of fitness, confidence and the schedule.
The departure of Monique Spencer, Christania Williams, Claudette Allen and long distance queen Marleena Eubanks means that Saqukine Cameron will have to shoulder greater responsibility this year for Edwin Allen High School. With a ‘never say die’ attitude, Saqukine is expected to lead from the front and score valuable individual points, a challenge she readily accepts and is eager to execute.
Some observers believe she is best suited to capture maximum points in the 200m/400m double. Her potential face-off with upcoming stars Shauna Helps of Wolmer’s and Natalliah Whyte of St. Jago in the 200m could be one of the ‘Champs 2015’ highlights.
Cameron will also face stiff competition for the 400m title from Camperdown’s Dawnalee Loney last year’s silver medallist who then competed for Balaclava High.
In the past, Saqukine has experienced some setbacks to her promising ‘champs’ career as a result of injuries which caused her to miss full participation in 2013. She returned in 2014, a fitter and more reliable athlete, enjoying relative success and contributing to her team’s overall victory. She won gold in the 4x100m and 4x400m sprint relays and individual silver in the Class 1 200m final.
This super athlete will be seeking to lower her personal bests of 23.44 seconds in the 200m and 53.63 seconds over 400m at ‘Champs 2015’, which if achieved could see Saqukine Cameron ending her ‘Champs’ career in a blaze of glory.
It would be a triumphant farewell for someone who has served her school and country with distinction.
