Cleopatra Borel-Brown was the winner, throwing 18.76 metres to improve on her
third place from Cartagena four years ago. Borel-Brown, a two time world indoor
finalist, was in dominant form as all of her five registered throws were bettered
than the second place Zara Northover of Jamaica who threw 17.04m.
Annie Alexander got TT’s second medal taking the bronze with 16.76m.
Pilar Mc Shine was runner up in the women’s 1500m final. McShine, the national
record holder (4:14:20), clocked 4:21:66 to finish behind the defending champion
Rosibel Garcia of Colombia (4:21:17) with Beverly Ramos of Puerto Rico in third (4:
22:02).
2009 World Championships 400m bronze, Renny Quow, failed to finish in the men’s
400m final. The race was won Nery Brenes in a new Costa Rican record of 44.84
seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 44.94, which he set in the semi-finals of
the Beijing Olympics.
Tabarie Henry of the US Virgin Islands was second with 45.07 seconds ahead of
Jamaica’s Allodin Fothergill (45.24).
Aleesha Barber collected TT’s first medal of the track and field section on Sunday
when she won the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.09 seconds.
In the women’s 100m flat, Ayana Hutchinson earned silver in 11.47 seconds.
Hutchinson, who trains at MVP track Club was beaten to the line by Tahesia
Harrigan of the British Virgin Islands (11.19).
Colombia’s Yomara Hinestroza was third in 11.51 seconds. Richard Jones was fifth
in the men’s 10,000m final in 31:42:06. Janeil Bellille advanced to the finals of the
women’s 400m hurdles. The 2008 World Junior silver medallist clocked 58.11 to
finish behind Nickiesha Wilson of Jamaica in the first of two heats.
Wilson ran the fastest in the semi-finals of 56.98 seconds.
Emmanuel Mayers bowed out in the semis of the men’s race. He finished seventh
in heat one in 55.38 seconds. Hometown favourite Javier Culson clocked the fastest
time of 49.89 seconds.
