Redhead targets Olympics 200m final

Janelle RedheadJanelle RedheadPLAINVIEW, Texas - Janelle Redhead, who is still in disbelief after been named Grenadian Sports Woman of the Year, will not allow herself to be distracted, especially - according to her - "in this Olympic Year".

The 22-year-old says her main goal is to be a finalist in the 200m, at the London Olympics.

Redhead is a sophomore at Wayland Baptist University in Texas, majoring in Fitness Management, with a minor in sports management.

With a personal best of 11.5 in the 100m, 22.91 in the 200m and 53.5 in the 400m indoor, she is determined to lower these times, and according to her training is going well, signaling that a good 2012 season, is in the making.

After receiving the Sportswoman of the Year Award, she stated she was very surprised. "I was shocked but at the same time I was very happy", were her words.

Currently she trains with Coach Rowland Thompson, but at the completion of the collegiate season, Redhead plans to return to her former coaches Tony and Mr. Johnson.

TrackAlerts.Com, 'the Caribbean's leading Track & Field website', caught up with Redhead - the 2008 World Junior 200m bronze medallist, and a semi-finallist at last year's Daegu World Championships - recently and asked her a few question

TrackAlerts.Com: How are your preparations for NAIA Indoor Championship coming along?

Janelle Redhead: I will be doing the 200 and 400 for nationals. As far as training goes, I am working hard and taking it a day at a time to see what the outcome will be.

TA: How would u describe this year's preparation in comparison to those in the past?

JR: It isn't much different; it's pretty much the same. I am just working harder and getting stronger. Weight room is also going great.

TA: What are your aims for this season?

JR: Well I want to have a good semester academically. On the track I want to stay healthy and prepare for the Olympics. I am also thinking about doubling; that depends on what events I qualify for.

TA: What's your most memorable moment in the sport so far?

JR: I would have to say World Juniors in 2008; going into the finals, my groin was hurting. Going in I was the favorite but in my mind I was just going out there to have fun. At the end I finished 3rd and that made me happy, knowing that I still got a medal with an injury made me feel great.

TA: Do you have hopes of becoming a professional athlete:

JR: Yes, I do want to become a professional athlete after I complete college. I love Track and Field and I see this as my future career.

TA: What are your chances of winning a major title in 2012?

JR: I am not sure, but I am not focused on that. Every time I go on the track I just want to get a personal best. I also want to make the finals at the Olympics.

TA: What are some of the difficulties you face as an athlete?

JR: Physical Therapy. I don't get the proper treatment as far as massages and the like go.
TA: If you had to do it over, would you have chosen to stay home or would you still attend college in the states?

JR: I would have stayed in Canada and go to college because I would have been treated differently there.

Redhead will compete this weekend at Texas Tech where she will be running the 400m. Her first 200m will be at Tyson Invitational.
