Pan Am Games shot put champion Cleopatra Borel has called for support of women the sport.
Trinbagonian Borel made the call at last week's Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year ceremony.
Borel, the Trinidad Express reported, wants support to ‘go back to the grassroots’ and according to her "take advantage of all opportunities"
“In Trinidad and Tobago, we have a limited population so we have to go the grassroots; find the girl in Mayaro, find the girl in Guyana, find the girl in Rio, the girl in Toco, the girl in Tobago, find all of our potential athletes and support them from the beginning of their career to the end," said Borel, who was named Sportswman of the year.
“I think that once our women continue to work, and once we nurture young girls, and we give athletes the support they need, the medals will come," said the T&T National record holder.
"That’s what we’re going to have to do if we want to compete with the rest of the world," she said.
In November, Trinidad & Tobago's Olympic Committee launched its quest for 10 Gold medals at the 2024 Olympic Games. The governing body of the twin island republic, the TTOC, has included a T-shirt line as part of its fund raising campaign in attaining this ambitious feat.
The Twin island Republic boasts a total of 18 Olympic medals; which include 2 Gold medals, 5 silver medals and 11 Bronze medals, from 19 appearances at the Olympic Games.
