Telkom has signed a deal with Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt to promote its fibre-to-the-home broadband offerings.

Telkom filmed Bolt in his home country of Jamaica last weekend for the promotional material it intends using to advertising its fibre products.

The telecommunications operator described the alliance as a “first of its kind between a South African telecommunications company and an international sprint star”.

It said Bolt is regarded as the fastest person ever and the first man to hold both the 100m and 200m world records. “He is the reigning Olympic champion in these events and the first man to win six gold medals in sprinting.”

“We believe that Bolt, as the fastest person in the world, will assist us in creating awareness of the speed, consistency and reliability that fibre technology offers,” said Telkom chief marketing officer Enzo Scarcella in a statement.

The deal with Bolt has seen Telkom rebrand its fibre broadband offering as “Boltspeed Fibre”.

Telkom has said it will deploy fibre alongside a million homes by 2018.
