‘The Independent Review of Athletics in Australia’, led by John Buchanan, has today been published.

In response, the Athletics Australia Board of Directors has unanimously made the following comments about the report:

“On behalf of Athletics Australia, we thank John Buchanan and his colleagues Lynne Williams, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, Matt Favier and Mark Bartels for the development of this report into our sport.

“This review, which was commissioned by the Australian Sports Commission in partnership with Athletics Australia, can only help us develop the sport of athletics.

“It will provide us with additional invaluable insights into some key areas for improvement that ensure that all parts of athletics in this country are unified, inclusive and working effectively together, and after further consideration of the findings we are confident we will emerge stronger than ever.

“We are pleased to advise that given the passage of time many of the recommendations in this report are already being implemented.

“That being said, we will now work closely with our key stakeholders, including Little Athletics Australia, our member associations and executive management team, to determine how to progress other recommendations of this review for the benefit of all involved with our sport into the future.

“Athletics Australia will only be in a position to respond to the detailed recommendations after we have digested the report and discussed the actions we will take with our stakeholders, including Little Athletics Australia and member associations, and the Australian Sports Commission. We appreciate everyone’s patience in allowing this vital process to be undertaken.

“We would, however, like to take this opportunity to thank the athletics community. We look forward to sharing the remainder of the Australian Athletics Tour with you in the coming weeks, as well as the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney and the 93rd Australian Athletics Championships in Brisbane next month.”
