MONTE-CARLO: World 400m Champion, American, Sanya Richards, believes that when compared to what other athletes earn in their sporting disciplines, track and field athletes deserve more money.
Asked if sports women deserve more money and attention as compared to their male counterparts , Richards replied that she shares the same views as Blanka Vlasic, who said: “Results are what should be appreciated, it doesn’t matter if it’s from a male or female athlete.”
Richards then went on to say, “I think things in our sport are okay….I think as a whole, all of us could do with more exposure and more money but relatively, I think women get paid well compare to the men (in track & field).”
“I don’t have many complaints as far as that goes,” she said, but was quick to point out that “I guess when you compare us to other sports, the playing field gets unlevel, I then think we do deserve more money.”
“I think our sport is just as tough and grueling as football, tennis and basketball. Those guys get paid a lot of money and so should we, especially with the expansive room for growth that our sport enjoys.”
Richards will be marrying New York Giants cornerback, Aaron Ross, in February, in Austin, Texas, with over 250 quests being invited to the wedding.
Of her plans for 2010 –
“Next season, I’m really looking forward to the Diamond League. I also want to run faster 400s and 200s. I think it’s time to lower my American record (48.70). And maybe go under 22 seconds in the 200.”
Her thoughts on Marita Koch’s World record (47.60) –
“It’s not something I think about very much. I’ll have to become more consistent in the 48s before I can really start thinking more about it.”
Many more quotes to come in the full video interview with Sanya Richards and Blanka Vlasic. Both spoke to journalists just before the IAAF Gala in Monaco on Sunday (Nov 22).
