IAAF agrees to new hosts for World Championship events

MONTE-CARLO: An agreement – as to who the hosts for the 2011 World Cross Country Championships and 2012 World Race Walking Cup will be – was met during the second day of the IAAF Council Meeting in Monaco.

The Council also heard progress reports from a number of future host cities, including the 2010 World Indoor Championships in Doha, the 2010 World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, the 2010 World Junior Championships in Moncton, the 2010 World Race Walking Cup in Chihuahua and the 2011 World Athletic Championships in Daegu.

The IAAF Council agreed that the 2011 edition of the World Cross Country Championships would be held in Punta Umbria, in the province of Huelva, Andalucia, in Southern Spain.

A popular tourist location, the seaside town is also known for its fishing industry.

The course proposed, based on a 2km loop, will be located close to the town center. The date accepted for this competition is March 20th.

It was also concluded that the 2012 edition of the IAAF World Race Walking Cup, be hosted by the city of Saransk in Russia. The capital of the Mordovia region, located in the center of the European part of Russia, the city has a long tradition in race walking. It has hosted a number of IAAF World Race Walk challenges over the years but is also one of Russia’s top centers that specializes in walk training. The date of the competition remains to be confirmed.

The IAAF then proposed that the city of Taicang in China, which also turned in bids for the 2012 edition, be given the possibility to host the 2014 World Race Walking Cup, pending confirmation by the Chinese authorities.
Located close to Shanghai, this harbor city has hosted previous editions of the IAAF World Race Walk Challenge.
