KINGSTON: World 400m champion Sanya Richards believes Usain Bolt has contributed somewhat to her success this past season.
After several failed attempts to take the gold, Richards finally crossed the line first at a major Championships, in a world-leading 49.00 seconds, 0.32 seconds faster than Jamaican Shericka Williams.
“This season I just had fun and relaxed. I think Usain (Bolt, winner of the sprint double in world record times) and the rest of the Jamaican athletes showed us that … ‘you run fast when you just have fun and relax’.”
“So I took a page out of his (Bolt’s) book and I was able to compete really well this season,” added Richards.
Jamaican-born American Richards, Russian Jelena Isinbayeva and Ethiopian Kenenanisa Bekele, in September, shared the one million dollar jackpot on offer at the Golden League series.
She won the women’s 400m race – as she did in all five previous Golden League meets this season – and thus was the first athlete to be assured at least a share of the jackpot.
Richards, who also won the gold at the world championships last month, took first place in a world-best time this year of 48.83 seconds, beating Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu into second place by more than a second.
