ZURICH – Asafa Powell, the Olympic and World Championships relay gold medalist, believes he has what it takes to beat Usain Bolt.
Bolt, who at last year’s Olympics ran 9.69 and 19.30, then helped Jamaica to the 4×100m title in 37.10, all world records, returned last week at the World Championships to lower the 100m and 200m to 9.58 and 19.19 respectively, is the greatest sprinter on the planet.
Despite these statistics, Powell, who broke the world 100m four times in his career, said yesterday’s 9.88 seconds run in Zurich for second behind Bolt, proved he can beat Bolt.
"Now I know that I can beat Usain when everything works fine for me,” he said.
"I have 9.6 in my legs and at my next meet I’m going to put it on the track," Powell said. "Everyone has to go out with that in mind, that they can beat Usain.
"He’s way ahead of the crowd right now but we’re really playing catch-up. We’ll get there somehow. Usain is taking the sport to a whole different level and we are going up there to join him."

Asafa needs to zip his mouth and just run. He has another chance on friday in Brussels when he takes on Tyson Gay.
Michael…nothing you said makes sense. Look at Diver v. Ottey., or Fraser, v. Jeter, or Fraser v. Stewart.
Asafa’s problem is 90% mental. And I stick with that. Whilest Asafa track physical skills grew, his mental skills did not. He gets distracted by some other athlete, and the know it.
